The Queen of Disco is back! Broadway alum Anthony Wayne is bringing Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical off-Broadway. Wayne, who will play the titular legendary performer, will also co-direct and pen the book to the tuner, which features music by Sylvester. Kendrell Bowman is set to co-direct. Performances will begin on September 5 at Theatre at St. Clement’s and run through October 5. The show will officially open on September 14.
Wayne has appeared on Broadway in Pippin, Anything Goes and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. He is joined in the cast by Anastacia McCleskey and Jacqueline B. Arnold as Izora and Martha—better known as the Weather Girls, as well as DeAnne Stewart and Jack Fuller. The new musical will feature choreography by McCleskey.
Mighty Real uses Sylvester’s music to celebrate the life of the “Queen of Disco.” Through his trials and tribulations and his glitzy, glamorous lifestyle, he was a symbol for fabulousness and a pioneer in the LGBTQ community. His many disco classics include "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)," "Dance (Disco Heat)," "Do Ya Wanna Funk" and "Can't Stop Dancing."
The tuner will feature scenic design by Don Gilmore, costumes by Bowman, lighting design David Lander and sound design by Rafe Carlotto / Sound Associates.
